We are often told that in the beginning of our great nation our founders laid down the guarantee of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." I contest this assertion.
The United States of America, as we know it, was founded when the Constitution was written. Yet the original document neither creates nor pertains to this modern incarnation of the United States. In a sense, this country is reborn every time that the Constitution is added to or interpreted by the Courts. This country also find rebirth through "constitutional" legislation and executive decisions. Thus, our great nation guarantees only that which those in positions of power and influence decide to guarantee.
It is from this assumption that I will approach ethics in America and abroad. While some may consider the Constitution to be a living document, I consider the Nation to be a living entity: constantly changing and never the same, though it may at times reflect its past.
